Technology Maturity and Scale-up
Show that your technology works at the scale you plan
Lenders finance proven technology, and “proven” has a precise meaning for them. An independent specialist assesses how mature your process really is, where it is still fragile, and what a credible path from pilot to commercial scale looks like.
Where technology maturity sits in your project
Technology risk is one of the first things banks and DFIs test in project finance. A clear maturity picture also helps when you approach technology providers and strategic partners who can share the scale-up risk with you.
How the maturity work runs
1. Assess. The specialist rates the maturity of each step of your process against the evidence available.
2. Test the weak points. Operating data, pilot results and reference plants are reviewed, and the gaps are ranked.
3. Plan. A scale-up plan sets the trials, guarantees and milestones that close the gaps.
Who carries out the work. An independent specialist from the network I work with, with a background in process engineering and plant scale-up, leads the work, speaks with you directly and presents the results. My part is to introduce the right expert and to connect the findings to your discussions with investors and lenders.
What the maturity work covers
Maturity assessment
A step-by-step rating of your process, with the evidence behind each rating and the references that exist today.
Process robustness
How the process behaves with variable feedstock, long run times and real operating conditions, and where it may fail.
Pilot and scale-up plan
The trials, performance guarantees and decision points that take you from pilot to a plant lenders can finance.
What you get from the maturity work
- A technology maturity report that you can share with lenders
- A ranked list of technical risks and how to reduce them
- A scale-up plan with milestones and decision points
- Performance guarantee requirements for providers
- A clear message for investors on technology risk
